How to Submit to Modelling Agencies

A question I get asked often is-- how do I submit myself to an agent?

Well folks, the secret is out, and it is not that hard.

Once you have picked an agency you would like to be represented by, read their submissions page requirements, fill out an application and ba-da-bing-ba-da-boom. That is all there is to it.

But, what if they don't have any details?

SENDING THE SUBMISSION EMAIL

Well first things first, send their submission office an email. I always title my submission emails "Lexi Redman Model Submission" easy, and to the point. For obvious reasons, use your own name. Or you can use mine. Any publicity is good publicity, I guess. Secondly, write a professional introduction. Say who you are and what your purpose is. If a friend is signed with them, you may want to mention that is how you know about them. Any other factors that drew you to them can also be mentioned here. But, keep it short, they go through hundreds of applications a week.

Important information to include: Height, Age, Measurements, Location, Phone Number, your portfolio (if you have one) and Snap Shots. For measurements, the chart below should help you out.

SNAPSHOTS

Snapshots are for some reason this outrageously daunting task to aspiring models. I have seen messy bedroom selfies, snapchat filters, and photoshopped instagram pictures for snapshots. In case you think those are appropriate, hint-hint, they are not. I have also seen models freak out thinking they need to hire a professional when really, their mum and a cell phone will work fine. The whole purpose of a snapshot is to show you looking exactly as you are. You should look fresh faced (no makeup), hair clean and simply styled (down is best) and in tight fitting clothes. Tight jeans and a tank, a bathing suit, whatever you wear needs to show off your body. If you don't like the thought of showing your body. please stop pursuing this career immediately. They should be well lit, in focus, and in front of a plain background.

Above are some recent snapshots I took. Are they from a professional photographer? No. Did I pay for them? No. Did me and my friend Taryn take them ourselves at our old middle school with a point and shoot? Yes. As I said earlier, the key is they need to look like you.

Now, on to posing. Most agencies will give you a list of shots they need, but usually it is headshot (example 1), headshot smiling, headshot profile, full length body (example 2), profile body (example 3) and sometimes three-quarter body (you've probably figured which one that is). Poses should be pretty minimal.

Attach these to your email, include all information above, and conclude with a sincere thank you to the company.

NOW WHAT

If an agency is interested, they will contact you. If not, you likely won't hear back. But keep trucking on. The industry is a roller coaster, and model looks go in and out of style faster than blue eye shadow. Keep working on upping your game, and doing as many test shoots you can to be the best model you can be.

XOXO Gossip Girl

Jk, still Lexi
