Why I quit my job, packed everything, and moved to chase my dream
Picture this: newly single, just finished electrical school, and not sure which direction your life is headed towards. You can either A. Find a well paid electrician position, start your pension, and make a decent living, or B. Say screw it, I want to make movies. And then the email comes in. Audition notice: lead in a feature film. You get the script, rehearse your lines, and tape your read. You think it's okay, but then again, you have always hated seeing yourself act. You send it, Nothing will probably come of it, but hey, it was fun.
Then the callback request comes in. You practice more lines, you start thinking maybe you could get this role. Maybe this role is a sign. A deal is made. If you don't get the role, then no biggie, you'll go back to work. But what if you get it? It seems so unbelievable that you tell yourself, if I do get it, then I am moving to Vancouver. The distant dream you have had since you were little starts to seem closer to reality. You toy with the idea of jumping head first into your craft, and the career you have so desperately wanted.
Flashback to being a young girl, and having fake conversations with characters in your head. Practicing funny accents and putting on a show for the neighbours. You were always a performer, and as shy as you were with talking about it, you would still practice your Oscar acceptance speech. Now is the chance to start your path towards that podium.
The callback goes well. All your years of improv training pay off at the end, and you find yourself slipping easily into the character. You flirt, you scream, you cry out with rage as the script demands. Until its over; you wait.
Then the execs want a meeting. Wow, this is your last chance to show how badly you want this part. This dream role. As soon as you first read the script you knew it was a role you were destined to play. The dialogue was relatable and realistic, the plot was tragic, but hopeful.
You sit with your tea, gently picking at the corner of the sleeve. Nerves run through you as you wait for the deciders of your fate to deliver their decision. It starts off well, friendly banter is exchanged. Then you get into it. Into the meat of the production. You hear about the production process, the film dates, learn about the crew. Excitement builds as you hope and silently plead for those four words to change the course of your life. And finally, at the end...
"You got the part"
